MCA Advanced Powerboat Commercial Examination 
 
 
Since 2005 the Maritime and Coastguard Agency have employed an examination system for holders of the Advanced Powerboat Course certificate that wish to be the Master on commercial vessels that comply with the Small Vessels Code. 
 
The exam is conducted by an independant party that attends the Sea School and assesses navigational knowledge and passage planning, boat handling and the safety of a potential skippers conduct. 
 
A large emphasis is placed on the understanding of the International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) including vessel lights and day shapes, Chartwork, practical position fixing, knowledge of heavy weather handling, emergency procedures and safe working practices. 
 
The exam takes a similar format to a Coastal Skipper Exam and has a duration of approximatly 8 hours for 2-3 candidates 
 
Prior to completing the exam a candidate must have the following qualifications :- 
 
 
- An optional but desirable option is to hold the International Standard STCW-95 Basic Training wich can be completed during an intensive 6 day course. Holding these qualifications dramaticaly increases your chances of work within the commercial world.
