RYA Powerboat Training
R.Y.A. Advanced Powerboat Course - Day and Night course.


Duration: 2 days + night exercise. Max. 3 persons per boat.

Minimum Age: 17

Course Content: Candidates will be taught how to safely plan for a coastal passage using both traditional charts and electronic navigation. Search patterns, rough weather handling, night navigation, emergency procedures, helicopter rescue and safety equipment are some of the topic included.

Prior knowledge: Candidates should be competent to the standard of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of the Day Skipper Shore based Certificate. A sound knowledge of GPS and Chartplotter systems is also useful.

Candidates are also required to hold a First aid and a VHF Radio operator’s certificate.

N.B. Those wishing to get the RYA Advanced Powerboat certificate Commercially Endorsed are advised to have their ML5 Medical completed and approved by their GP prior to attend the course to avoid any disappointment having completed the training.

International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for Power up to 10m


This qualification is required by all persons helming a power driven vessel in European and International waters. It is not a requirement for the UK.

The ICC for up to 10m can be awarded to the holder of a RYA Level 2 powerboat certificate or above but can also be completed by direct assessment or a combination of training followed by an assessment. For persons requiring an ICC for over 10m, then the Motor Cruising scheme is the preferred route.

This is an “Add-on” to the ICC and covers the inland waterways systems of Europe. It is only a multiple choice question paper and those wishing to sit the exam should purchase the RYA Euroregs Handbook. A copy of which is available for purchase from the school.
